Useful Contacts

Defibrillator

The village has a defibrillator in the old phone box, which also serves as the village library.

Church

St Odulph is the village church and is part of the parish of St Mellion-with-Pillaton. Plans have been made to form a single combined benefice with the parishes of St Dominick, Calstock, Callington, Stoke Climsland, Linkinhorne and South Hill. Although this scheme has not yet been finalised, these parishes are all now (October 2024) under the care of Rev Andy Atkins.

For dates, times and locations of Church Services, see the Notices page.

There's more information about the history and architecture of the church on the History page

The Celtic Quiet Places site also has some information about St Odulph and includes details of all the other churches in the Diocese of Truro that have registered with the Celtic Quiet Places project.

Village Hall

The village hall started life in 1838 as the village school. In about 1955 the school was closed and, after remaining unused for a while, the building was taken over as the village hall. Subsequently it has been refurbished and extended.

The Village Hall is managed by a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) set up in 2017, evolving from the previous management committee, now with 12 Trustees who run the day to day business of the organisation.

The objectives of the CIO are the provision and maintenance of a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Pillaton, without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, including use for:

  • Meetings, lectures and classes, and

  • Other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants.

The CIO submits an annual report and statement of accounts to the Charity Commission of England and Wales. If you want to see these documents or find out more about the CIO including current trustees, go to Pillaton Village Hall CIO.

You can book the Village Hall for any event or occasion online here. The Documentation link there should give you enough information about hiring the hall but if you require clarification or further information, then please contact Chris Ley.

For further information, please contact either the CIO Chairman Dave Dolley, or its Secretary Matt Roser.

Shopping

The nearest facilities - a convenience store, Post Office and petrol station - are at Hatt. To the north, Callington has shops in its centre and a Tesco on its outskirts. To the south, Carkeel has Waitrose, and Lidl a bit further south. Saltash has a Co-op and smaller shops (notably lots of hairdressers and charity shops). Most supermarkets deliver to the village.

At present, no-one locally is selling produce at the gate - you'd have to travel to St Dominic or Bohetherick (but worth it for the strawberries).

Public Transport

On weekdays only, Plymouth City Bus service 12A runs from Pillaton Weary Friar (07:38) to Callington Community College (08:16) via St Dominic and St Mellion, and returns from Callington (15:10) to Pillaton (15:47).

At other times, you'd have to walk two fairly hilly miles to St Mellion or three to Hatt to catch the 12/12A/12B bus (Bude-Launceston-Callington-Saltash-Plymouth). Use the link above for details.

The nearest railway station on the Penzance-Paddington line is Saltash, which usually has available street parking. Trains run more frequently from Liskeard, which has a relatively cheap car park. The most frequent trains run from Plymouth, which has more costly parking.

Find times and prices on the National Rail website or Trainline.

Traveline South West offers a journey planner that combines trains and buses.

Waste Disposal

These are the kerbside collection dates for waste and recycling. It is advisable to have your items at the roadside by 07:00 on the day.
The nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC) is at Saltash, near Waitrose. A booking system is currently being trialled there.

Accommodation

Kernock Cottages has four cottages just outside the village.
Rowse Farm Holiday Cottages has three, a bit further away.

For B&B, Smeaton Farm is about a mile from the village.
If you prefer a hotel, the Weary Friar is in the centre of the village, St Mellion International Resort in the next village, or there's Pentillie Castle overlooking the River Tamar.

If you like tents, there's Bush Farm Wild Camping.

Libraries

There are public libraries in Callington and Saltash. Plymouth Central Library has a larger collection, including reference books.
In 2013, Pillaton opened its own little library in a distinctive red telephone box next to the village notice board. Anyone is welcome to borrow or donate a book, and it's open 24/7.

Local Industry

The area is mostly given over to farming but Kernock Park Plants (KPP) is a major plant grower and wholesaler.

Sports Facilities

The St Mellion International Resort is closest. China Fleet Country Club is on the outskirts of Saltash. Saltash Leisure Centre has a swimming pool that's often quiet, and there's another in Liskeard.
